Students are the demographic most likely to need STI testing and most likely to put it off. Both at once. This page is the short, practical answer to "where should I actually go?" if you're at a college or university in Ireland — whether you want the campus health service, a free HSE clinic nearby, or a home kit that arrives in plain packaging.
The three options for students
- Your college student health service. Cheapest (often free or a token charge for full-time students), most convenient, completely confidential.
- Your nearest free HSE sexual health clinic. Free for everyone. Often the better choice if you want a full screen, have symptoms, or are home for the weekend.
- Free home test kit from sh24.ie. Free, 17+, posted to any Irish address (including student accommodation) in plain packaging. Best if you have no symptoms and just want to know.

Other colleges & further education
If your institution doesn't have a dedicated student health service, you have the same two options as everyone: the free HSE sexual health clinic in your county, or a free sh24 home test kit. Both are excellent. Find your county on the main hub page.
How often should students test?
Honestly, more often than you'd think. The HSE's loose guidance: if you have multiple partners, once a year as a baseline. If you've had unprotected sex with a new partner, test once that exposure is outside the window period (usually 2–4 weeks, depending on the test). If you have symptoms, test now. If you're starting a new relationship, both testing is a really mature thing to do.
What about confidentiality on campus?
Campus health services in Ireland are bound by the same patient confidentiality as any other medical service. Your results, your visit, your reason for visiting — none of it is visible to academic staff, parents, the Students' Union, or anyone else. Test results aren't on your academic record. Nobody is told.
If you'd rather not use campus services for any reason — sometimes people just prefer to keep college and personal life separate — the free HSE clinic in your county is exactly as good and equally confidential. And if you'd rather not visit anywhere in person, sh24 will post a kit to your accommodation in completely unmarked packaging.
Common student worries
- "My GP at home will tell my parents." They won't — patient confidentiality applies from age 16. But if you'd prefer not to use your home GP, the campus or HSE option exists for exactly this reason.
- "What if my flatmates see the kit?" sh24 ships in plain packaging — no logos, no branding. Looks like any small parcel.
- "I don't have a medical card." Doesn't matter. HSE sexual health services are free regardless of medical card status.
- "I'm an international student." Same — free regardless of nationality or PPS number. Bring your passport for ID if asked but it isn't always required.
- "Will it affect my visa / Garda registration / future immigration?" No. Sexual health services are not visible to immigration authorities.
